Australian wine brands Deakin Estate, La La Land and Azahara find a new home at Calabria Family Wines
Australian winemaker Calabria Family Wines welcomes three Australian wine brands to its growing portfolio; Deakin Estate, La La Land and Azahara. The formal agreement, signed at the end of last week, is a brand-only sale and transfers ownership of these well-established brands from the Wingara Wine Group, which is part of Henkell Freixenet, to the Calabria family.
Calabria Family Wines will now produce all wines from each of the brand portfolios at its Griffith, NSW winery, and manage marketing across all markets.
“Each of these brands brings something new to the Calabria team and we look forward to welcoming them to the family as we diversify and expand our wine offering,” said third generation general manager Michael Calabria.
“Deakin Estate, with over 50 years of winemaking history behind it, has achieved exceptional distribution, especially in tough export markets where many haven’t. This can only happen with a good quality product and a dedicated team behind it.
“La La Land and Azahara, although newer to the market, are both unique brands with well-established portfolios and market presence both at home and abroad. We look forward to savoring La La Land’s dedication to emerging wine styles with our own Italian alternatives, and celebrating Azahara’s effervescent sparkle and sophistication.
Wingara Wine Group is part of Henkell Freixenet, a global market leader in sparkling wines, which was formed in January 2019 from the legacy of Henkell & Co. Group and Grupo Freixenet.
Sean Shortt, Executive Director of Sales and Marketing at Wingara, commented: “Henkell Freixenet sees Australia as an important market with great potential, and our strategic focus is the development of our brands Global Icon, Henkell, Freixenet & Mionetto . We are delighted that the Deakin Estate, Azahara and La La Land brands are moving to a family business that has the resources and the drive to take brands to the next level.
Calabria Family Wines will continue the long-standing distribution partnership with Berkmann Wine Cellars in Great Britain for Deakin Estate and La La Land. Deakin Estate is currently ranked # 2 Australian on-site listed brands in the UK (Wine Business Solutions 2020).
“We know the value of having a family team behind a brand, and we are delighted to see these top performing brands continue to grow under a new owner at Calabria Family Wines,” Rupert Berkmann, second generation CEO of Berkmann. said Wine cellars.
The changes will take effect today, November 12. Both parties have agreed not to disclose financial details of the transaction.
