Help Wanted: Lenoir County Tax Department

REVENUE AGENT – Salary scale: $31,293 – $39,081

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, performs revenue posting and accounting, research and analysis, and assists citizens. Processes wage garnishees, bank garnishees, rent garnishees, escheated fund garnishees and sheriff levies; verifies, issues and updates Lenoir County beer and wine licenses; responds to telephone, email and in-person inquiries; scans images of checks to upload them online to the bank. The employee is responsible for extensive data entry work in recording tax payments and other data in computer files. The employee will work in a team environment under the direction of the Assistant Collector.

• Working knowledge of the North Carolina Machinery Act, other statutes, and county ordinances and policies affecting the collection of property and personal taxes.
• Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including the accurate management and accounting of large sums of money.
• Working knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices.
• Knowledge of ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional standards and/or federal, state or local laws, rules and regulations.
• Proficiency in the operation of common office machines, including popular computer-assisted word processing and file management programs, calculator, fax machine, copier, check and document scanner, and letter opener.
• Ability to calculate numbers quickly and accurately.
• Ability to prepare tax collection records and reports.
• Ability to assist in the preparation of detailed financial reports.
• Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public, lawyers and businesses. • Ability to multitask (i.e., the ability to manage more than one function at a time with precision and diplomacy.)
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Field experience related to taxation preferred but not required. High school diploma and three years of experience in administrative or financial work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have strong analytical, computer, cash management, verbal and written communication skills.

SPECIAL NEEDS: Must meet the criteria for coverage under a general surety bond. Must pass the fundamentals of tax collection and property tax listing and valuation within the first two years of employment.
