Lang & Reed Napa Valley launches Chenin Blanc Mendocino 2021

Offering rare character depth and range, only seven barrels produced due to drought

St. Helena, California, November 16, 2022 – Renowned winery Lang & Reed Napa Valley has just added the 2021 Chenin Blanc Mendocino (SRP $32.00) to its lineup of elegant wines. When they began their exploration of Chenin Blanc about ten years ago, they never imagined that they would be on the wave of the rebirth of this noble grape variety. Almost lost in California’s underrated wine cellar, the demand and number of wineries producing Chenin Blanc has exploded in the past five years. This 2021 Chenin Blanc is Lang & Reed’s eighth vintage from a single vineyard located in Mendocino County, Northern California.

The vinification of this wine is a collaborative effort between winemaker John Skupny and his son, Reed. Faced with the second year of severe drought, the 2021 harvest resulted in only 7 barrels of wine. What the small production lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. One of the characteristics of Lang & Reed Chenin de Mendocino is its immediate drinkability, but with the feeling that there is more pleasure to be had with a little aging in the bottle. As the Skupnys are dedicated to sourcing the best possible grapes from the best sites, the wine offers a feeling of depth and range of character rarely found in California Chenin Blancs.

A fresh and lively blend of peach, pear skin and sea brine dominates the aromas of the 2021 vintage. The senses are fully engaged with scents of lime blossom and a slight minerality. On the palate, similar flavors are amplified, revealing a more complex wine than expected. With just the right amount of acidity, these slightly honeyed flavors stay fresh and lively through to the finish. Exuding the classic charm of chenin blanc, this wine has the makeup to age for a few years with a good cellar.

Inspired by France’s Loire Valley, where Chenin Blanc gained its fame, the source for this bottling comes from an area of Mendocino known as the Talmage Bench. The vineyard, located on the east side of the Russian River, was planted in 1980 on a gentle north-facing slope that allows for good drainage and even ripening without too much heat buildup. This forty-two-year-old, head-pruned vineyard was affected by the second year of drought, resulting in a much smaller crop of intense, perfectly ripe fruit.
