A new original wine bar opens in Digbeth. After a series of successful wine pop-ups, Wine Freedom will open its first permanent bar in April, “suppliers of the best natural wines”.

The new bar will be housed in the currently empty WJ Wild building on Floodgate Street, a few doors down from The Engine Room.

The proposed 2,500 square foot bar will feature a “great wall of wine” that patrons will walk past before entering the main bar.

Wine Freedom, based in Warwickshire, has become renowned for supplying organic and biodynamic artisanal wine with little to no chemicals.

It won the AA Wine of the Year 2019 list after working alongside Hampton Manor in Solihull to expand the wine offering at the hotel’s Michelin-starred Peels Restaurant.

The AA judges praised their “super impressive roster which is wonderfully curated. Features include awesome producers … Amazing, very stylish and takes you on a journey and a story.”

Wine Freedom co-founder Sam Olive told BirminghamLive: “We are very happy to open a permanent location in Digbeth. It will be a multi-functional space – a wine shop, bar, event space and kitchen. .

“Obviously, serving organic and natural wine will be at the center of our concerns, but we want to create an interactive experience where wine education is at the heart of it.

“And without suffocation or intimidating jargon. It’s about making learning about wine fun and accessible.”

Wine Freedom wines come with quirky, down-to-earth descriptions such as “delicate and fragrant… the opposite of all Aussie Reds bullshit.” Another wine is described: “A very nice and sweet introduction to orange wine. Plus the label is quite nice.”

In addition to offering a wide variety of organic wines, the 70-seat venue will serve food – with various chefs residing in the venue’s kitchen each month.

Sam added: “Our bar will be a comfortable relaxing environment where people can learn about wine and enjoy good food and drinks in a pleasant setting.”

“We are a fairly well established brand and have supplied wines to many places in Birmingham including Michelin starred restaurants – the plan is to serve a menu specially designed to complement our wines rather than the usual cheese and ham platters. that you might expect. “

Wine Freedom has already hosted pop-ups at Dig Brew Company, Caneat Café, The Plow, Kilder.

The bar will join Digbeth’s thriving dining scene, which includes The Ruin, Digbeth Dining Club, The Old Crown Pub and Baked In Brick.
