Top five UK wine brands revealed
Casillero del Diablo has become one of the top-selling wine brands in UK retail, overtaking rival Blossom Hill, according to recent data from Nielsen.
The latest results from the analyst show Casillero del Diablo’s total off-trade sales reached £139.9 million (12 months to June 15, 2019). This represents an increase of 11.6%, which suggests that the (global) trend towards premiumization has not spared Chilean wine.
Meanwhile, Blossom Hill sales fell -8.8% in value over the same period.
As a result, the iconic Chilean label can now lay claim to being one of the best-selling wines in the UK, joining a list dominated by 3 top Australian brands and one Californian.
According to Nielsen, the UK’s top retail wine brand is Hardys, which is owned by the Carlyle Group. Barefoot Wine is hot on their heels, the brand was founded in 1986 by Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey. It was then purchased by Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery in 2005.
However, the antipodes are not left out. Australian flagship brands McGuigan and Yellowtail occupy the third and fourth positions on the Nielsen list respectively.
Casillero del Diablo’s promotion to the Nielsen List marks the first time a Chilean brand has held a Top 5 spot.
Owned by Concha y Toro, Casillero del Diablo’s Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon is the UK’s best-selling brand of this varietal.
Total sales of Concha y Toro in the UK increased by 13.2% in value over the same 52-week period leading up to June 2019.
Additionally, Casillero del Diablo has the highest average bottle price (£6.51 per 75cl) of all the top 5 wine brands.
Commenting on the promotion, Clare Griffiths, Commercial Director of Concha y Toro UK, said: “This is a historic achievement for our leading brand.
“Thanks to continued strong investment in Casillero, our partnership with Sky Cinema now in its fifth year, and an unwavering dedication to wine quality, more wine buyers than ever are enjoying ‘the wine of the devil’s cellar.” It’s especially nice to see our premium tiers add value to the category.
