Which accounting firms offer the best internship programs?

Career development website Firsthand on Wednesday released Vault’s latest ranking of the best internship programs in the United States for 2023, which included a section just for accounting.

Firsthand surveyed thousands of current and former interns about their experiences, then used their responses to rate company internship programs in several categories, including Top 100 Internship Programs Overall, Best Internships by Industry, Best Internships most prestigious, the best internships for pay and benefits, and the best training and mentoring internships.

From 100 Best Internship Programs in the USA, an accounting firm has the second best (and no, it’s not a Big Four firm). Palo Alto, Calif.-based CPA firm Frank, Rimerman + Co.’s summer internship program scored 9.495 out of 10, just behind the firm’s InStep internship program score of 9.990. Infosys technology and consulting services.

According to Firsthand, here’s what makes Frank, Rimerman + Co.’s summer internship program one of the best in the country:

Frank, Rimerman + Co. LLP offers a unique eight-week rotating internship that allows students majoring in accounting to try auditing, tax, consulting, and more. The program is centered around the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto, but some interns will have the opportunity to spend time in other offices. The purpose of the summer internship is to present students with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in a professional environment.

Interns will spend the first week in orientation and training, which is led by partners and managers. After the training, interns will begin their rotations in various departments. Rotations may include: CFO Accounting and Consulting, Tax, SOX/SOC Compliance, Technology Solutions/Systems Implementation, Business Valuation, Assurance and Consulting. Interns are exposed to many different clients and industries, and they work with all levels of employees during the program. Each intern will be assigned a work mate to assist them during their rotations. The last week is reserved for conclusion and pleasure.

Since interns will frequently visit client sites and travel between offices, access to a vehicle will be essential.

Summer interns contribute to the business by: working on audit engagements and developing an understanding of audit processes; attend client meetings and engagement planning meetings; assist with business risk and compliance advisory projects; prepare tax returns (individuals, trustees, partnerships, non-profit and corporate); process business transactions in appropriate accounting records and financial statements; and learning standardized office and accounting software.

Throughout the internship, there are a variety of social activities that offer interns a chance to meet more people from all offices and levels. Events in previous summers have included: the San Francisco Giants game, bocce ball, visiting our St. Helena office in wine country, sailing around San Francisco Bay, attending the company, zipline and other social gatherings by office.

Another CPA firm, Atlanta-based Aprio, came in at No. 4 overall with a score of 9.332, just ahead of Home Depot.

It’s no surprise, then, that Frank, Rimerman + Co., and Aprio were ranked #1 and #2, respectively, in the 25 Best Accounting Internship Programs. Here is the full ranking for 2023:
